The Duck brand duct tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest requires contestants to create prom attire made entirely from brightly colored Duck brand duct tape in order to win scholarship money and additional money for their high school. This year, over 240 couples from 43 states including 6 Canadian provinces entered the contest, according to Yahoo. Once the competition has been narrowed to the top 10 choices of prom attire made entirely of duct tape by the high school couples, contestants are eliminated through weekly voting with the lowest scoring designs being eliminated each week until a winner is chosen. Over 44,000 votes were cast in the contest.

The winners of this year’s Prom Competition for the Duck brand duct tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest was Yancy Esquivel, age 17, and her boyfriend Ray Banna, age 18, from Gilbert, Arizona. The couple even wore their duct tape outfits to their high school prom held at Mesquite High School in Arizona.
The Scholarship Contest awarded Esquivel and Banna $3000 each for their efforts and awarded an additional $3000 to their high school, Mesquite High School. The prom attire made of duct tape for the top ten contestants were all widely imaginative and required a lot of time and creative input. According to Esquivel and Banna, Esquivel spent time designing the prom dress and tuxedo suit while Banna collected votes through networking on Facebook and other connections. Overall they spent 300 hours and used 30 rolls of tape to create the ultimate duct tape prom dress and tux suit.

Duct tape has long been popular amongst high school students as a cheap, easy, durable fix to any fashion mishap such as a ripped backpack or jeans or a simple way to customize attire. I knew several students from my high school who would joke about duct tape suits that they planned to wear for prom or eventually to their weddings, and some students even applied duct tape to their attire on a regular basis as a fashion statement. The Duck brand duct tape Scholarship Contest is an excellent way to apply high school students’ creativity into a productive project that not only looks fashionable but also invests in the students’ education future through potential receipt of scholarship money and productive use of creativity for all contestants. Even those contestants who did not win the scholarship contest could likely add their project and photographs to their personal portfolio for review when applying for a university, art programs, or other related work.
