HGTV has wonderful shows about decorating your home and garden, with lots of tips on how you decorate your own home. The hosts take you through all of their decorating and home renovation ideas step-by-step, and keep you interested in what’s happening on the show. They also introduce you to the homeowners they’re designing for, and let you get to know them too. Sometimes, the homeowners can be just as compelling to watch as the design show itself.
Take last night’s episode of “Dear Genevieve†for example. Genevieve Gorder receives tons of mail everyday from homeowners asking her to help them fix a room in their house that doesn’t quite fit them. She must sort through and determine whose home she’s going to renovate in each episode. On last night’s episode, the choice was easy.
The homeowners were a married couple with twin boys who were looking to have their master bedroom renovated to fit the wife’s needs for a comfortable oasis she could relax in when her medical ailment flared up. She spends a lot of time in bed because of her illness, and her children hang out in her room with her a lot. Genevieve created a perfect oasis for this disabled mom to relax and retreat to, with space for her boys to hang out and visit.
This episode would have been perfect for many individuals facing the same needs: a relaxing getaway in the home to retreat to when we’re not feeling well, especially for those with chronic illnesses. There are so many different ways you can create this oasis in your own home, as Genevieve showed viewers.
The first step is to pick paint colors that relax and comfort us. Soft blues and yellows, for instance, can create a calming effect, and still be warm enough to put a smile on our faces. A good mix of furniture, including a big, comfortable bed, comfortable seating, bookshelves and storage for clothes can help give the room a more inviting feel for other family members or friends to spend time with us in our bedroom oasis. A mix of dark and light curtains on the windows gives us the choice to let the sun in, or sleep in the middle of the day. Soft rugs and an uncluttered selection of accessories can finish off the room to perfection. You can add your own style by showcasing your personal collectible pieces throughout the room.
Although Genevieve has a whole team of construction workers, painters, sewers and furniture movers, you can create an oasis in your bedroom on your own, or with help from family and friends, just by making a few simple changes.
