Lady Gaga always pushes the envelope with her slew of strange outfits, but one look in particular, her anime-style eyes worn (or computer-generated) in "Bad Romance" has inspired a myriad of young girls to wear contact lenses mimicking the wide-eyed look. Girls going gaga for the Gaga look are purchasing specially made contact lenses that are imported from Asia.
"Circle lenses" are colored contacts that give eyes the anime look because they make the eyes appear larger than they are by covering the iris, and even a part of the whites of eyes. Besides the fact that they are illegally imported because the U.S. does not allow the sale of lenses without a prescription, doctors disapprove of the fad because of their harmful side effects. The lenses have the ability to deprive the eye of oxygen, and possible cause serious vision problems.
However, with the hype of Asian culture spreading through all the way over to the U.S. -- and it being so readily available on the Internet -- it does not seem girls are willing to let go of their addiction to circle lenses. Customers learn how to go about getting their lenses through instructional videos on Youtube, and people are capitalizing upon the business to help provide the platform for those who are after the doe-eyed look.
Hopefully the young girls who are wearing these lenses can come to understand just how harmful they are for their sensitive eyes. Maybe this fad will have the ability to fade away like so many others have. Some say pain is beauty, but I believe that natural beauty is better than harming something as important as the eyes we look out of.
