Cristiano Ronaldo is the well-known captain for the Portuguese national soccer team, which lost 1 to 0 to the national Spanish team in the World Cup on Tuesday. As of Sunday, however, Ronaldo will be known as someone else as well: dad.
Ronaldo posted on his Facebook page Sunday that he has recently become the father of a baby boy. The mother of the child prefers her identity to remain confidential, however Ronaldo says the child will be under his “exclusive guardianshipâ€.
As he wrote, “It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy,†and Ronaldo goes on to ask “everyone to fully respect [his] right to privacy (and that of the child) at least on issues as personal as these are.†He says no more information will be given about this topic.
While it seems like a surprising announcement, perhaps created to distract Ronaldo’s fans from the World Cup loss to Spain, the news has been confirmed by his sports agency. The existence of Ronaldo’s son “is in fact true.â€
I find Cristiano Ronaldo’s post to be refreshing. I’m glad to hear that he is so happy about the birth of his son, and I appreciate his request for privacy. I do find it odd that he posted such personal information on a public site, but I understand his desire to share his joy with the world. I wish Ronaldo all the best in his new role of father, and I hope he is able to succeed at raising the child as he has succeeded in his sports career. It's an entirely new playing field his will take on, but one that I'm sure will bring him great joy.
