Lindsay Lohan's latest tweet says the Kombucha isn't the reason her SCRAM bracelet went off...but why would anyone think it was? And what is Kombucha, anyway?
Kombucha is a fermented tea that is gaining popularity pretty quickly due to its supposed health benefits. The obvious allusion to Lindsay and her SCRAM alert is because the beverage, while sold in the refrigerated portion of any health food store and Whole Foods across the country, is fermented much like beer is - although the alcoholic content is almost non-existant.
Kombucha is made quite often by homebrew-lovers of naturopathic medicines and foods. The healthiness of this drink is noted in Wikipedia: "Some kombucha producers make vague claims such as 'kombucha detoxifies the body and energizes the mind',[11] but do not make specific claims because there is little published research on the health benefits of kombucha. Proponents commonly claim kombucha aids cancer recovery, increases energy, sharpens eyesight, aids joint recovery, improves skin elasticity, aids digestion, and improves experience with foods that 'stick' going down such as rice or pasta. However, these claims are largely unverified or subjective."
Regardless of the actual benefits of Kombucha, it is popular and trendy right now. The taste isn't for anyone, but as a lover of all things with supposed health benefits, I tend to like the zing that comes from the fermentation.
